A steep sub-tropical ravine that drops through tree ferns and giant Chilean rhubarb to its own beach on the Helford River. It was planted from the 1840s by the Fox family, Quakers who also made neighbouring Glendurgan. The beach, Polgwidden Cove, was an embarkation point on D-Day: over 7,000 American troops left here for Omaha in June 1944. It’s near Mawnan Smith, a few miles south of Falmouth. Open every day of the year, no need to book ahead, with an admission charge.
