Daphne du Maurier set her smuggling romance on Frenchman’s Creek, a wooded tidal inlet off the Helford River, and the real creek is as quiet as the book suggests. A footpath from Helford village leads down through the trees to the water; there’s no road to the creek itself and little to do but walk and watch the tide come and go. Bring boots for the mud.
