One of the great English landscape gardens spreads over hundreds of acres at Stowe: lakes and valleys studded with more than thirty temples, bridges and follies, shaped in turn by Charles Bridgeman, William Kent and Capability Brown through the 1700s. The National Trust runs the gardens; the mansion at their heart is a school, shown separately. It makes a big day out, ticketed, with a lot of walking — the nearest station is a good 15km off at Wolverton.
