Robert Smirke built Normanby Hall between 1825 and 1830 for the Sheffield family, a plain Regency block now run by the council at the centre of a 300-acre country park near Scunthorpe. Red and fallow deer graze the park, and the walled kitchen garden — laid out in 1817, restored in the 1990s — grows only pre-1901 varieties, worked by traditional methods. House, gardens and park are open to visitors.
