Gravetye Manor’s garden was created from 1885 by William Robinson, the pioneering “wild gardener” who shaped how the English still think a flower garden should look. The house is now a hotel and restaurant, so the garden itself only opens to outsiders on Thursday mornings, 9–11am, for a small charge. The wider 600-acre estate is more generous: the William Robinson Gravetye Charity keeps a network of free walking trails open all year, a short walk from West Hoathly and The Cat Inn.
