A medieval great hall and cobbled courtyard sit at the heart of Dartington, on the Dart just above Totnes. The buildings, largely late-fourteenth-century, were rescued in the 1920s by Leonard and Dorothy Elmhirst, who laid out the gardens around them — grassy terraces, a sunken tiltyard and mature trees, with a reclining Henry Moore figure looking down over them. The gardens are open daily, with an admission charge. Totnes station is about 2km south.
