Thomas Hardy borrowed the 120ft folly tower at Charborough Park for his novel Two on a Tower, where the house appears thinly disguised as Welland House. It’s still a private estate, home to the Erle-Drax family, its 18th-century park studded with huge oaks. The grounds open on selected weekends in May, when local villages sell teas and cakes for charity — otherwise it’s best seen from the Hardy Way, which skirts the edge of the park.
