The Bankes family’s country house near Wimborne, built in the 17th century and later dressed up in Italian style, now looked after by the National Trust. The grounds run to formal terraces, a Victorian fernery, a kitchen garden and wide parkland, but the best-known moment is the snowdrop wood in late winter, when the paths open early for the display. Paid entry (free to Trust members); house and garden keep separate seasons, so check ahead.
