Monks and townspeople shared this church and spent three centuries falling out over it. Pope Innocent IV split the building between them in 1249; the monks then raised an octagonal tower at the east end around 1376, the town answered with a taller west tower in 1447, and the silhouette has been lopsided ever since. The town’s nave is still the parish church, with Norman stonework inside; the monks’ half stands roofless behind it. Wymondham is a mile off.
