Cornwall's big surf beach, a long curve of pale sand at Whitesand Bay just north of Land's End
If you picture a proper Atlantic surf beach, this is close to it. Sennen is the sandy sweep of Whitesand Bay near the far western tip of Cornwall, a broad beach of clean pale sand that catches the swell rolling in off the ocean, which makes it one of the best-known surf spots in the county. Families spread out on the sand at low tide, surfers and bodyboarders take the waves, and lifeguards patrol the main beach through the summer season. It runs north into the wilder, harder-to-reach Gwynver, and the little harbour of Sennen Cove with its lifeboat station sits at the southern end. The South West Coast Path links it to Land’s End, about a mile and a half on along the cliffs. The Atlantic here throws up strong rips, so it’s worth swimming between the flags when the lifeguards are out.
