This white-sand bay on Eriskay is where Bonnie Prince Charlie first set foot on Scottish soil, on 2 August 1745, at the start of the Jacobite rising. Local tradition holds that the pink sea bindweed growing here sprang from seeds he dropped — it’s found nowhere else in the Hebrides. The beach is a short walk from the Eriskay ferry pier; the island itself is reached by causeway from South Uist, or the CalMac ferry from Barra.
