Two water mills sit side by side on the Caldon Canal at Cheddleton, turning a pair of waterwheels named George and Helen. They once ground flint and bone to a fine powder for the Potteries down the valley; one mill was purpose-built for the job in the late 18th century, the other converted from grinding corn. A preservation trust has run the site since 1967 and opens it free of charge, with the wheels sometimes turning on open days.
