The church of St Senara at Zennor has a medieval bench-end carved with a mermaid, comb and mirror in hand, tied to a local tale of a chorister lured into the sea. D. H. Lawrence lived just outside the hamlet, at Higher Tregerthen, through 1916–17, until wartime suspicion drove him out. It’s wild moor-and-cliff country between St Ives and the coast, and the Gurnard’s Head is the pub nearby.
