Tongue stands above the Kyle of Tongue, a shallow sea loch crossed by a long causeway, with the ridges of Ben Loyal rising behind. A short climb from the village leads up to Castle Varrich, a small ruined tower on a knoll with a cracking view over the kyle and out to sea. It’s a natural halt on the north-coast route along the A836.
