Ben Loyal stands on its own above the Kyle of Tongue in the far north of Sutherland, a Corbett — a Scottish hill between 2,500 and 3,000 feet — topped by a row of granite tors. The main summit, An Caisteal, means ‘the castle’, and from below the ridge does look a bit like a battlement. Because it rises almost from sea level, the 764m feels far bigger than the number suggests, and people have long called it the queen of Scottish mountains. The usual approach is from the Tongue side; the going is boggy low down and rocky up top, with wide views over the Kyle of Tongue and across to Ben Hope.
