The cliff railway linking Lynton to Lynmouth below is the only fully water-powered railway in the UK, opened in 1890 and worked by counterbalancing water tanks. The town itself is Victorian, built up on the clifftop as the two villages grew into a resort. West along the coast lies the Valley of Rocks, a dry gorge grazed by feral goats.
