The timber spire of St Mary’s twists as it rises, warped by damp and unseasoned oak, and it’s the thing everyone remembers about Cleobury Mortimer. Thomas Telford stabilised the church in 1790. The small town sits on the western edge of the Wyre Forest below the Clee hills, an easy place to break a walk. Ludlow is the nearest station, a fair way off to the west.
