Chilworth sits in the Tillingbourne valley below St Martha’s Hill and its hilltop church. The valley was a centre of gunpowder-making for close to three centuries, and the overgrown ruins of the mills still line the stream through the woods. The Percy Arms is the village pub, and Chilworth station is in the village on the Guildford–Redhill line.
