The builders downed tools on this Victorian Gothic mansion in the 1870s and never came back, leaving it half-finished — grand from the outside, but with missing floors and bare rooms within, and masons’ tools still where they were set down. It stands hidden in a wooded valley near Nympsfield, and its attic holds a nationally important colony of horseshoe bats. Paid entry, open on selected days; Stonehouse station is about 4km north.
