The largest lowland pine forest in Britain, Thetford Forest was planted across the sandy Breckland from the 1920s, after the First World War left the country short of timber. Forestry England runs it now, laced with walking and cycling trails; High Lodge is the main visitor hub, with bike hire and a Go Ape course. It’s open and free to wander, and wraps around the flint mines of Grime’s Graves.
