Just outside Barrow-in-Furness, a narrow three-arched bridge crosses Mill Beck on the old route between Furness Abbey and the mill its monks once ran. It dates from the 15th century and uses the same red sandstone as the abbey; at only about three metres wide, it was built to carry a single horse and its load of corn, malt or salt. After the abbey closed in the 1530s the mill fell out of use and the bridge saw far less traffic, which may be why it survives largely unaltered. Its original stone parapets are long gone, leaving a plain, low crossing only just above the water.
