Lucy Boston bought the moated manor at Hemingford Grey in 1939 and recast it as Green Knowe, the setting for her children’s novels. The Norman house behind the garden is one of the oldest in England to have been lived in continuously since the 12th century. Around it she planted topiary, old roses and herbaceous borders that her family still tends. The garden is open daily; the house is shown by appointment. Huntingdon station is about 6km west.
