Port Eliot has been the Eliot family’s seat for generations, built around the remains of an Augustinian priory beside the River Tiddy at St Germans. Sir John Soane remodelled the house in the early 1800s, while Humphry Repton laid out the park and gardens that survive largely as he left them — a walled rhododendron garden, a maze, and views across to Brunel’s railway viaduct. Gardens open daily, with pre-booked house tours; Trematon Castle and the Lynher Estuary are both close by.
