Tim Burton filmed the garden-party scenes of his 2010 Alice in Wonderland here, and it’s easy to see why: clipped yews, sculpted topiary and sweeping lawns running down towards the Lynher. The early-18th-century house, still lived in by the Carew Pole family, looks over grounds that Humphry Repton advised on in 1792. There’s also a national collection of daylilies. National Trust. Saltash station is about 3km off, over the water near Torpoint.
