Malleny Garden is a three-acre walled garden at Balerno, on the south-western edge of Edinburgh, cared for by the National Trust for Scotland. It’s an old-fashioned sort of garden — deep herbaceous borders, a fine collection of old shrub roses and four clipped yews said to date from the 17th century. It also holds Scotland’s National Bonsai Collection. There’s an admission charge. Curriehill station is a few km north; check opening times before you go, as they vary by season.
