Mount St Bernard is a working Trappist monastery in Charnwood Forest, founded in 1835 and reckoned the first permanent monastery in England since the Reformation. The church was designed by Augustus Pugin, given free by the Earl of Shrewsbury. The monks farm the land and, since 2018, brew Tynt Meadow, England’s only Trappist ale, sold at the gate. The abbey church and shop are open to visitors, though the community keeps to a quiet daily round.
