Substantial ruinsruined, but plenty survives above ground
Founded in 1196 for Premonstratensian canons, Torre Abbey grew into the wealthiest house of its order in England, and enough came through the Dissolution to make it the best-preserved medieval abbey in Devon. The church is a roofless shell out in the gardens, while the vaulted undercrofts and the gatehouse of about 1380 still stand, along with the tithe barn — called the Spanish Barn after the 397 Armada prisoners locked in it in 1588. Torbay Council runs the house as a museum and gallery; ticketed, closed Mondays, and a short walk from Beacon Cove.
