Falls on the Black Water near Contin, crossed by a swaying suspension bridge where you can watch salmon leap in autumn
Rogie Falls sit on the Black Water, a couple of miles northwest of Contin in Easter Ross. A footpath through the forest leads to a suspension bridge slung across the gorge, and from it you look straight down onto the water tumbling over rock ledges. The draw is the salmon: from late summer into autumn they run upriver and hurl themselves at the falls, trying to leap the drop on their way to spawn. There’s a fish ladder built alongside to help them past the worst of it. The walk from the car park is short and easy, and the spa village of Strathpeffer is just up the road if you want to make more of the day.
