Wooler is a small grey-stone market town on the north-east edge of the Cheviots, and the long-standing gateway for walkers heading into the College and Harthope valleys or up onto The Cheviot itself. It sits on St Cuthbert’s Way, the cross-border pilgrim path between Melrose and Lindisfarne. There are cafés, a few pubs and outdoor shops for stocking up before the hills. Chatton is a few miles east; the nearest station is a fair way off.
