Ullapool was laid out from scratch in 1788 as a herring port, planned by Thomas Telford for the British Fisheries Society, and its neat grid of streets along Loch Broom still shows that origin. It’s the largest place in Wester Ross and a lively little town — shops, hotels, and a music scene at the Ceilidh Place — as well as the ferry port for Stornoway on Lewis, run by CalMac. A natural base on the A835.
