Whitewashed smugglers' harbour in a steep ravine.
Polperro packs its whitewashed cottages into a steep, narrow ravine that funnels down to a small tidal harbour. Cars are left at the top, so the lanes below are walked rather than driven. It made its living from pilchard fishing and, for a long stretch, smuggling — there’s a small heritage museum on the quay to that effect. Looe station is about 5km round the coast.
