Maryport grew up where a Roman fort guarded the western end of the coastal defences beyond Hadrian’s Wall, and later as a Georgian harbour town shipping Cumberland coal. The Senhouse Roman Museum, on the headland above, holds a notable collection of altars and inscriptions dug from the fort. Down by the harbour there’s an aquarium and the old quays to wander. The station is a short walk from the centre.
