Cardigan Castle stands above the tidal Teifi, and it was here in 1176 that the Lord Rhys held the first recorded eisteddfod, a festival of Welsh poetry and music. After years of decay it was restored and reopened in 2015, with gardens, a restaurant and rooms to stay in. The port once had 291 registered ships, until the river silted up. The Guildhall of 1860 is an early example of the Gothic style John Ruskin championed, with a market in its arched basement and a Russian gun from Balaclava outside, a nod to the Earl of Cardigan, who led the Charge of the Light Brigade. St Dogmaels Abbey and Poppit Sands are across the river towards the sea.
