Come at low tide and you can walk across the sands to Burgh Island; come at high water and a quirky sea tractor makes the crossing instead. Bigbury-on-Sea is a beach village at the mouth of the Avon, popular for surfing and rock-pooling. On the island itself, the old Pilchard Inn serves anyone who makes it over. Ivybridge is the nearest station, about 12km north.
