Tucked into the wooded limestone of the Doward, above a bend of the Wye near Symonds Yat, King Arthur’s Cave opens through two mouths into a pair of chambers. Victorian diggers found it full of the past: bones of mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, cave hyena and bear lay under the floor, alongside flint tools left by people sheltering here at the end of the last Ice Age. The Reverend William Symonds first excavated it in 1871. It sits on woodland paths through Lord’s Wood and is free to reach on foot.
