RSPB Loch Ruthven
Local highlightLoch Ruthven, in the hills south of Inverness, is the most important breeding site in Britain for the Slavonian grebe — a rare little diving bird with golden head-tufts in spring. A short walk from the car park leads to a hide overlooking the reedy shallows where they nest. Late spring and early summer are the time to catch them; bring binoculars, as the birds keep well out on the water.
