Strathfarrar is one of the quieter great glens of the Highlands, running west from near Beauly into big, empty hill country. Forty square kilometres of native pinewood, river and mountain, it has stayed quiet partly because getting a vehicle in is not straightforward — the private road up the glen is gated, with limited access, so it pays to check locally before you plan to drive in.

That quiet is part of the reward. A run of Munros, Sgurr na Ruaidhe among them, lines the north side for experienced hillwalkers, while lower down there are smaller hills like Sgorr na Diollaid and Beinn a’ Bhathaich Ard.

This is serious, remote ground. The high tops are a full day out with real navigation, a long way from help if things go wrong, so they suit confident, well-equipped walkers rather than a casual afternoon. Give the forecast the weight it deserves, go in settled weather, and tell someone your plan before you set off.
