Places to explore in FlintshireWales · North Wales
Wales's second-smallest county faces the Dee estuary in its north-east corner, where saltmarsh and the great dunes of Talacre Beach meet the sea beneath a striped lighthouse. Edward I's coastal castle at Flint began the ring of fortresses that would encircle Gwynedd, and the Welsh princes answered with strongholds of their own such as Castell Ewloe. Pilgrims still come to the holy well at Holywell, beside the ruins of Basingwerk Abbey. Inland the limestone rises toward the Clwydian hills above Mold, with wooded Wepre Park closer to the estuary towns.
