Horace Walpole built Strawberry Hill from 1749 as a self-styled “little Gothic castle”, papier-mâché fan vaulting and all, and in doing so more or less invented the Gothic Revival look that swept Victorian Britain a century later. The house and its garden are now run by a charitable trust and open to visitors Wednesday to Sunday, with last entry an hour before closing. It’s a short walk from the Thames Path, and Ham House is close enough for a two-in-one visit.
