Cowdray House is the atmospheric shell of one of England’s grandest Tudor courtyard mansions, gutted by fire in 1793 just days after its owner, the 8th Viscount Montague, drowned attempting to shoot rapids on the Rhine — locals still call it a curse. The ruins sit in Cowdray Park between Midhurst and Easebourne. General walk-in access is currently closed for conservation work, but the Cowdray Heritage Trust runs guided tours and events through the year.
