Brookwood Cemetery
Open accessfree to visit at any reasonable time
Opened in 1854 by the London Necropolis Company, Brookwood was built to relieve London’s overflowing graveyards and was for a time the largest cemetery in the world, with its own railway running funeral trains from Waterloo until German bombing ended the service in 1941. The grounds are now divided into sections for dozens of faiths and nationalities, plus Commonwealth and American war cemeteries. Free to walk any day, right beside the Basingstoke Canal, with Brookwood station opening directly onto the grounds.
