Brodsworth Hall is a Victorian time capsule: English Heritage acquired it in 1990 and deliberately left the interiors as they were found, faded curtains and all, rather than restoring them to their Victorian best. The Italianate mansion was built in 1861–63 for Charles Sabine Thellusson by the young architect Philip Wilkinson. Outside, the restored gardens run through a fern-filled dell to a formal terrace and rose garden. Open April to October (weekends only into autumn), with a tearoom in the old servants’ wing. Conisbrough Castle is a short drive south.
