Cranmore is a big one — over fifteen acres, which makes it among the largest enclosures in Devon, strung along the hillside above Tiverton where the Lowman joins the Exe. A single bank and ditch run round it. Archaeologists have pointed out that it would have been a poor fort, since the higher ground to the south looks straight down into it, so whatever it was for, holding off an attack from uphill was not the main idea.
The town is right below, with Tiverton Castle a mile down in it, and the footpath up from Exeter Hill is steep. Knightshayes Court and the Grand Western Canal are both a short drive away if you want an easier afternoon.
