The Gothic architect William Burges built Knightshayes for the Heathcoat-Amory family, whose fortune came from lace-making down in Tiverton — though the client fell out with him over the cost and cut the plans back. The interiors are worth a look, but the real draw is the Garden in the Wood behind the house: rare shrubs and rhododendrons threaded through hillside woodland, with a formal terrace below. National Trust; paid entry. Tiverton Parkway station is about 9km east.
