Around a handsome Georgian square laid out in 1760, Broughton-in-Furness sits on the edge of the Duddon valley where the fells drop to the estuary. A central obelisk raised in 1810 for George III’s jubilee still stands in the middle, with the old fish slabs and stocks under the chestnut trees. Foxfield station is a couple of kilometres south on the Cumbrian coast line.
