Whaligoe Steps are a flight of around 330 flagstone steps zig-zagging down the cliffs to a tiny natural harbour, once used by the herring fishermen who landed their catch here for the women to carry back up. It’s signed off the A99 at Ulbster and easy to drive straight past. The steps are steep and can be slippery, so take care — and remember it’s the same climb back up. Wick station is about 11km north.
