Dunbeath sits where its river meets the sea in south-east Caithness, a quiet village that gave the world the novelist Neil Gunn, born here in 1891 and author of Highland River. There’s a heritage centre in the old village school and Iron Age brochs in the strath behind. The harbour, down a steep side road, is worth the short detour.
