Neptune’s Staircase is Thomas Telford’s run of eight locks on the Caledonian Canal at Banavie, lifting boats around 20 metres and forming the longest staircase lock in Britain. Built between 1803 and 1822, it takes the best part of an hour to watch a boat work all the way up or down. Banavie station is right beside it, with a fine view back to Ben Nevis.
