Carn nan Gabhar is the highest of the three Munros that make up Beinn a’ Ghlo, the big sprawling massif north-east of Blair Atholl. A Munro is a Scottish hill over 3,000 feet (914m), and at 1122m Carn nan Gabhar tops the range. The name means roughly “cairn of the goats”, and the summit is a stony dome at the end of a long, curving ridge. The three Beinn a’ Ghlo Munros are usually done in one big day, with Carn Liath and Braigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain coming first, so it’s a long outing with plenty of up and down. The hills lie inside the Cairngorms National Park, and the broad slopes need map and compass in cloud.
