One of the smallest cathedrals in England, and only because Scottish Presbyterian forces pulled down six of its eight nave bays between 1645 and 1652 and carted the stone off to shore up the castle and the city walls. What’s left is in daily use and free to enter, with a blue and gold barrel ceiling worth tipping your head back for. Carlisle Castle is ten minutes away; the Hadrian’s Wall Path starts near both.
